Introduction: The treatment of several cancers has been changed by immunotherapy, which malignant cells are as target by immune system. Immune suppression and the tumor microenvironment limit therapies. Natural products as source of biologically active compounds, regulate immune response and pathways involved in tumor suppression.
Methods: Originals research studies on natural products and immunotherapy simultaneously. The studies were examined according to the natural compound, cancer models, type of immunotherapy, and main experimental findings. After comparing the reported results. The tumor growth, apoptosis, immune-cell responses and signaling pathways of microenvironment were evaluated.
Results: Some natural products can enhance the activity of immunotherapeutic treatment. In a lung cancer model, Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) combined with PD-1 treatment reduced tumor volume and weight more than eighter treatment alone. It revealed that apoptosis and T cell activation were increased. Macrophages polarization shifted toward the M1 phenotype, while this changes observation occurs in the P13K/Akt and ERK signaling pathways. These results demonstrate that AS-IV may contribute to the antitumor activity pf anti-PD-1 by influencing the tumor microenvironment.
Conclusion: As a useful adjuvant in researches, natural products have satisfaction outcomes. In cancer immunotherapy. They have effects on immune cells and tumor-related signaling pathways. However, evidence is preclinical, differences in experimental models and doses can affect the reported results. Experimental and clinical provident is needed to establish the most effective combination and their potential therapeutic value.
