  • Drug Use Evaluation (DUE) of 5- Fluorouracil and Oxaliplatin and their’s related adverse drug reactions in cancer patient at Boali hospital

  • Introduction: Background: Nowadays cancer is developing in an enormous rate and many patients are suffering from that. One of the ways of treatment is chemotherapy which has many side effects. Purpose: In this project we try to discuss sufficient prescription and according to protocol of treatment regime of patients so that in possible errors we could see that how much of the side effect’s severity is related to errors in prescription and getting medicine to patients and that we could decrease the severity and length of effects by getting accurate dose of medicine to patients.
  • Methods: One hundred receiver of Oxaliplatin and 5FU patients that are suffering from colorectal, liver, gastric and gallbladder cancer, are involved in this project. The BSA of patient are calculated by referring to cooperation themselves and by searching in their medical files. the exact dose of the prescribed drugs was then determined using in NCCN, CCO, NHS and UpToDate protocols. Up to two weeks after discharge, the observed complications were studied to determine the relationship between the severity and duration of adverse drug reaction and the probable difference in dose of the drug delivered to the patient
  • Results: Among the patients, including 52 men and 48 women, five common symptoms were seen containing mucositis, nausea and vomiting, neuropathy, diarrhea or constipation and anorexia. In comparison of protocols, it was noticed that only 5 percent of patients are getting the accurate dose mentioned in treatment regime
  • Conclusion: 13 percent of noticed errors was due to wrong computing of BSA and the rest of errors was due to other conditions such as medication packaging limit or physician’s discretion or ... With statistical discussion and computing of P-value it was recognized there is a meaningful relation between all of the common symptoms mentioned (except neuropathy) and the difference of dose given to patients
